Response Directorate

Auxiliary Air Program

Dear D5NR Shipmates,

My Name is Thomas Siedenbuehl, and I am the Assistant District Staff Officer-Aviation/Training (ADSO-AVT) for our district.

With this e-mail I would like to draw your attention to the Auxiliary Air Program or AUXAIR.

In addition to serving the general mission of the Auxiliary, thIs group brings their skills and resources providing operational aviation support to the United States Coast Guard.

  • Holding a pilot’s license is not a requirement for participation in AUXAIR.
  • Our core of trained Air Observers plays a vital role in aviation operations.

If you are an Auxiliarist in BQ status, you can apply for consideration for participation in the Auxiliary Aviation Program.

Participation in AUXAIR begins with extensive coursework and training which takes place outside of an airplane.

This work takes significant time and effort, some of which takes place at various locations, both near and far, and much of which is self-directed.

Some of these courses relate directly to aviation, but many relate to operational aspects of general Auxiliary activity.

You will also go through a more comprehensive background check because you will be working directly with the confidential information which comprises a foundation for the Coast Guard’s operational environment.

Once you have completed all the necessary training, and your second-level background check is complete, you will be ready to work in an airplane, as the final step in your initial qualification as an AUXAIR Air Observer.
