Coast Guard issues Action Order to combat sexual assault
By AJ Pulkkinen, MyCG Writer
Sexual assault is a violent crime. It shatters lives, destroys trust, and undermines the readiness of our crews. In the Coast Guard, trust isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of everything we do. No one should ever fear their own shipmates.
That’s why the Commandant has issued a new Action Order to combat sexual assault and the behaviors that enable it, like sexual harassment. Here’s what that means:
• Stronger prevention: Clear standards of conduct, better training, and leaders at every level stepping up.
• Better reporting options: You’ll know your choices and have access to expert, trauma-informed care.
• Immediate response: Every report will be taken seriously, handled professionally, and victims’ privacy and dignity will be protected.
• Long-term support: Recovery doesn’t have a timeline. We’ll make sure resources are available for as long as needed.
• Accountability: Those who commit these crimes—or fail to act—will be held responsible under law and policy.
This isn’t just leadership’s job. Every Coast Guard member—Active, Reserve, Civilian, and Auxiliary—has a duty to uphold the highest standards and take action when needed. The courage we show in rescuing someone at sea? That same urgency applies here.
We’ve already completed 24 of the 33 major actions to combat sexual assault and will finish the remaining initiatives this year. Next steps include monthly leadership reviews, an updated SAPRR Strategic Plan within 45 days, and a detailed implementation plan within 90 days.
This is about creating a Coast Guard where everyone feels safe and respected. Together, we can make that happen.
